AgroTel has released a major update to its mobile application, integrating real-time weather forecasting and crop price tracking functionality to help farmers make data-driven decisions about planting, harvesting, and selling their produce.
The new features, which are available to all AgroTel users at no additional cost, provide localized weather predictions with specific agricultural relevance, such as rainfall patterns, temperature trends, and potential extreme weather alerts that could affect crops.
"Weather is perhaps the most critical factor in agricultural success, yet many smallholder farmers have limited access to accurate forecasts," said Fatima Njeri, AgroTel's Chief Technology Officer. "By integrating this functionality directly into our financial services app, we're giving farmers the information they need exactly where they already manage their agricultural finances."
The weather forecasting feature uses a combination of satellite data, ground weather stations, and machine learning algorithms to provide predictions tailored to specific locations. Farmers can set up notifications for important weather events such as the start of rainy seasons or potential frost conditions.
Equally significant is the new crop price tracking functionality, which aggregates market prices from major agricultural trading centers across the region. Farmers can monitor price trends for their specific crops and receive alerts when prices reach certain thresholds.
"Price information asymmetry has long disadvantaged smallholder farmers, who often sell their produce without knowing the current market rates," explained John Muthama, AgroTel's Agricultural Data Specialist. "This feature empowers farmers to time their sales more strategically and negotiate better prices with buyers."
The app update also includes an AI-powered recommendation engine that combines weather data, price trends, and individual farm profiles to suggest optimal planting and harvesting times for maximizing profits.
Initial feedback from users has been overwhelmingly positive, with many reporting that the new features have already influenced their farming decisions. The company plans to further enhance these capabilities in future updates, with plans to add pest and disease forecasting based on weather conditions and historical patterns.
